Jay Z Shares His Side of Infamous Fight with Solange: ‘She Is Like My Sister’
In 2014, Solange made headlines when TMZ reported an elevator brawl between her and her sister’s husband, Jay-Z after the annual Met Gala event. Now, Jay-Z is giving his side of the story. In a radio interview with Rap Radar, Jay told hosts Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller that Solange is “like my sister. I will protect her. That’s my sister, not my sister-in-law. My sister. Period.”
Jay had opened the topic by starting with a clarification, saying that “[Solange and I] had one disagreement ever. Before and after we’ve been cool.” That “one disagreement” has long fueled speculation and theories, particularly following the release of Beyoncé‘s album Lemonade and Jay’s own 4:44. On the Lemonade tracks “Hold Up” and “Forward,” the lyrics appear to subtly allude to the incident. Fans posit that Jay’s album was named after the Le Bain hotel where the brawl took place, which is located at 444 W 13th St. in New York. Plus, the “Kill Jay-Z” lines “You egged Solange on / knowing all along all you had to say you was wrong,” seem to be a pretty direct reference.
It seems it only took three years for Jay’s steam to cool off — or at least, for his pride to let him open up about the incident. In a wake of self-examination and personal revelations on 4:44, he has been clearing the record and cleaning up his good name. Finally, becoming the man that the Queen Bey deserves.
