Why Do Olympians Bite Their Medals?

The age old question, why do athletes bite their medals on the podium? The answer might surprise you.

Since the 1991 Olympic Games many of us have seen tons of photographs of the athletes smiling as they bite down on their medals, and the reason behind it? The photographers ask them to do it. One theory is that the photographers can get more money for the picture if it something different then the winners just standing on the podium smiling.

Of course one way to see if something is real gold is to bite down on it. Real gold is soft so your teeth marks would remain, but for all the Olympic athletes that won Gold medals, they are actually made out of silver and are just gold plated. Not that any of them would run to a local pawn shop when they got home, or get them melted down, but you never know.
