Although I admittedly have a weird phobia about going into space I must say I am fascinated by the video from the International Space Station (ISS) hovering above Wisconsin into Western Michigan. Since this is the closest I will ever get to see the earth from space it is pretty amazing.

So what exactly is the ISS all about?  For the last twenty-some years, ISS has been continually orbiting with humans inside the vessel making it the longest-occupied space station ever. On any given day there are seven astronauts living and working in space.

According to "Orbiting about 250 miles above our planet, the ISS functions primarily as a space laboratory for a variety of scientific experiments and research studies that would not be possible on Earth."

What are some of the experiments being done in Space? According to NASA.GOV some include: 1)  Producing the next generation of medical scanning technology 2.) Creating new drugs for disorders like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy 3.)  Lowering heat in cities and tracking water. See the video below for more.

ISS is the largest artificial satellite in orbit and can be seen from earth with just the naked eye. It is about the size of a football field. ISS circles the planet every 90 minutes so "astronauts aboard the ISS have the unique opportunity to witness 16 sunrises and sunsets in one 24-hour period."

Isn't that amazing and crazy at the same time? Here is where the part comes in that freaks me out, the spacewalk which is mandatory to keep the space station running at its peak. I have this irrational fear of my lifeline coming undone and I float off into space. Crazy right? I am never going to be an astronaut so I don't have to worry about this, but thank you to all the brave men and women who risk their lives for periods of time on ISS and for all the time and energy put into research and experiments.
