About a year ago, I shared details about a lengthy construction project that would close an area of Canal Park to the public for several months.

The project got underway last year, designed to reinforce the shoreline right in front of the Lake Superior Maritime Museum at the foot of Duluth's Aerial Lift Bridge as well as to better connect pedestrian pathways in the park space managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers to the Duluth Lakewalk, which is managed by the city.

The Lakewalk had undergone reinforcement and reconstruction a few years ago after a series of powerful storms damaged the shoreline and popular path along the Lake Superior shoreline. This project completes the process for the small portion of the Canal Park shoreline that was not already worked on.

During the project, the public has been unable to enjoy the green space in front of the Lake Superior Maritime Museum and the quick connection from the Lakewalk to the North Pier along the canal.

Pedestrians have had to walk around a tall fence since the project got underway last spring, creating a bit of an inconvenience for visitors and locals during the project.

In a recent social media post, an update was provided on when things are expected to reopen to the public.

The Lake Superior Maritime Museum Association shared on April 6 that the project is expected to be wrapped up next month.

This is pretty much right in line with the timeline of the project that was laid out last spring. A majority of the work was done during the warm weather months of 2025, work paused over the winter, and the finishing touches will be completed this spring.

While no exact date has been given, we now know that sometime in May, we can expect to see the space, closed for about a year, reopened to the public!
