This isn't good. The City of Proctor is warning residents about a scam that is circulating the area.

City officials took to their Facebook page to warn Proctor residents about the scam, stating that people in the area had already received the scam phone call. How the scam works is simple: residents receive a phone call from a scammer posing as an employee of Minnesota Power.

From there, they are told that they have not paid their power bill and ask for your personal information to make the payment and / or make things right. This is how scammers get your bank information and personal information.

While this scam may be easy to fall for, city officials are reminding residents that their power company is Proctor Public Utilities and not Minnesota Power. Therefore, if you live in the area and receive a call like this, know that it is not legitimate and there is no need to worry about your power bill.

As with all scams and situations like this, make sure to never give out any personal information or banking information to someone over the phone or email. Always take the time to do a little bit of research on who people over the phone say they are if you suspect someone is a scammer and / or if someone is asking for your personal information.

Just this month, the Better Business Bureau was warning everyone about a scam that pops up every year around this time. Scammers try to take advantage of people giving to breast cancer research in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month and use this as a means to get money and profit for themselves.
