Why You Won’t See WLSSD Around The Northland Anymore
If you've lived in Duluth or several other places in the greater Twin Ports area for a while, you're probably familiar with the name WLSSD.
The acronym name is short for 'Western Lake Superior Sanitary District', and has been the agency responsible for handling a variety of waste items, including things like yard waste, wastewater, household hazardous waste items, and other solid waste items.
WLSSD has been in existence since 1978, handling the above-mentioned waste needs for a number of communities, including Duluth and surrounding areas like Proctor, Hermantown, Rice Lake, Wrenshall, Cloquet, Scanlon, and other nearby communities.

This week, WLSSD announced a rebranding, moving on to a new name - Resource Renew.
Why did WLSSD rebrand to Resource Renew?
In an announcement made on April 16, they explained that the move is designed to reflect the evolution of what the entity does for the area.
The growing focus on sustainable practices, like looking for ways to reuse materials and waste byproducts, while continuing to capture waste in a safe way before it can impact the environment and human health, is all in the vision of what is now Resource Renew.

Upcycling, generating clean energy, and returning clean water to the area's rivers and lakes are all emphasized as they look to the future under this new brand.
As a spokesperson explained to our news partners at WDIO, the rebrand is an effort to let the public know they do much more than just wastewater treatment.
So while WLSSD will still exist to handle garbage, recycling, hazardous materials, food & yard waste, and water treatment, the public-facing name will now be Resource Renew moving forward.
