There are always plenty of causes that have specific months to recognize them.  For example, October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  It's also National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Many people go out and buy specific breeds of dogs, often spending a whole lot of money.  While that in my opinion is fine if you're after a particular hunting or service breed of dog, keep in mind that plenty of shelter pets need good homes.

Also, if you don't mind waiting on a specific breed or type of dog, you might be surprised which ones will find their ways into shelters.  For example, my wife used to work for a non-profit dog rescue, and they have more than once taken in highly trained hunting breeds.  Sometimes owners just can't handle a dog's personality traits or higher energy, and sometimes owners pass away with nowhere for the dog to go.

Many times, when you are adopting a dog from a shelter, you are saving it's life.  It most likely will take a shelter pup some time to acclimate to a new home life with you, but generally it's worth the initial minor struggles.

The ASPCA, also known as The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals really has eye opening statistics on just how many pups need homes.  Locally to the Twin Ports area shelters like Animal Allies and the Humane Society of Douglas County would love to have you stop by and see the pups up for adoption.

It may still cost you a few bucks to adopt a shelter dog, but a new family member might be a lot more rewarding than you think.  Especially considering you might be saving their life.
