I know I am not the only one who sees the ships coming in and out of the Duluth Harbor or sailing out on Lake Superior and thinks how neat it would be to sail aboard one of them across the Great Lakes.

If you're like me and think that would be a neat experience to have, there's now a chance to win just such a chance to win a trip aboard a thousand-foot laker through a fundraiser for a Duluth area organization.

The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association (LSMMA) just recently shared that they are holding a raffle with the grand prize being a once-in-a-lifetime weeklong round-trip journey aboard one of the Great Lakes' thousand-foot vessels with a few guests.

The trip will be aboard the Edwin H. Gott (seen above at the docks in Two Harbors) for the winner and up to 3 guests during the 2027 shipping season. The specifics of the journey are somewhat fluid, with the winner and their guests getting to depart based on the ship's schedule.

The average trip lasts about 6-7 days, and you'd likely depart from Two Harbors, but again, this is largely contingent on the ship's 2027 schedule.

While the Gott and other boats like it are far from passenger cruise ships, the accommodations and experience aboard these working vessels are still quite nice.

Twin Ports area shipping enthusiast and YouTuber "Vibe With Mike" got a similar opportunity last year to sail aboard a 1,000-foot Great Lakes ship across Lake Superior, showing off the guest quarters and dining experience aboard ships like these.

In my article about his experience, he highlighted some of what you'd experience as a guest aboard one of these ships, and I'll admit that it looks like a heck of an awesome experience if you're even remotely interested in the ships that sail the Great Lakes.

A couple of things that the LSMMA does note are that the ship is not handicapped-accessible, and that you do need to be at least 18 years old to enter the contest. All guests will also need a valid passport by the time you'd set sail. You can learn more about the rules for the giveaway here.

To win this trip, there are a couple of ways to get raffle tickets. One of them is by stopping by the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center in Duluth's Canal Park, where you can purchase raffle tickets.

The other is by downloading the online ticket form from their website and mailing it in with a check or money order to the LSMMA. You'll have the option to select the number of entries you'd like to purchase on the ticket form.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from now until October 23, 2026. Any mail-in entries need to be postmarked by that date. Then, a drawing will be held on Saturday, November 7, during the "Gales of November" Conference at the DECC in Duluth. You don't need to be there in order to win, but that's when the drawing will be held.

The money raised by the raffle tickets sold during this giveaway will help the LSMMA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with its mission of preserving the maritime heritage of Lake Superior and the Twin Ports through education and collaboration.
