How Duluth Could Steal The Name ‘Titletown’ From Green Bay
To uninformed outsiders, Duluth, Minnesota, might seem like kind of an unsuspecting town in the sports world.
Such a person might think Duluth is a nice town in a pretty setting on a big lake, but the sports heritage of Duluth is deep, and there's a chance for something exciting to happen this week to take that a step further.
While Duluth has enjoyed a history of UMD Bulldogs Hockey being the centerpiece of deep playoff runs and championships, and nearby Hermantown has enjoyed a lengthy high school hockey dynasty, it is exciting to see a couple of new names joining the list of sports greatness in the Twin Ports area.
The Duluth Harbor Monsters have been leading that charge as a new team in a new league last year, winning the first-ever ArenaMania Championship in 2024 and defending their title with a 2025 trophy just a couple of days ago.
Lurking under the radar for casual fans is yet another team looking to make a huge splash in the realm of championships - the Duluth Huskies baseball team.
The Huskies had a solid season, finding their way into the playoffs once again after doing so several times in recent years. This year, their path to the playoffs feels almost Cinderella-like, with a commanding series sweep over the La Crosse Loggers on Sunday and Monday.

Getting a little help from other teams around the league, the Huskies' seeding among the remaining teams in the playoffs set up Duluth to host their final two potential games at Wade Stadium.
The first of those two games was successful, beating the Mankato Moondogs in a 4-1 victory to claim the Great Plains Championship title and advance to the Northwoods League Championship game.
Duluth Marshall's Owen Marsolek threw six scoreless innings against Mankato, adding an additional local element to this game, making it even more special for fans around the area.
The Huskies now host the Green Bay Rockers in the Northwoods League Collegiate World Series Championship Game, playing directly into my comment about the opportunity to steal the name "Titletown" from Green Bay with a win on Thursday night.
The Huskies will host Green Bay with a 6:35 pm first pitch at Wade Stadium on August 14, looking to win their first-ever league championship.
The Huskies have made 4 previous appearances in the championship game since the team's inception in 2003, but each of those appearances (2004, 2013, 2018, and 2022) has ended in losses.
If the Huskies can break that trend and claim a victory over Green Bay, it will not only be the team's first league championship, but it will also mark the most wins in a season for the team.
If they win, following up on the Harbor Monsters' dominating win just a couple of days ago, it's easy to make an argument to call Duluth Titletown - at least in the Midwest.
I know, the name is associated with the Packers and the NFL and has nothing to do with the Arena League and the Northwoods League, but it's still a fun thought for Northlanders having plenty to cheer about so far this season.
Congrats Harbor Monsters, and go Huskies!
