Watch Ed Sheeran Perform ‘Wish You Were Here’ at the Closing Ceremony of Olympics

Ed Sheeran already performed for a billion people at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert in June, so taking the stage in front of an equally massive worldwide audience during the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony must have had a familiar feeling.

Except this time, Sheeran was backed up by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and performed one of the classic rock band’s most recognizable songs, 1975′s ‘Wish You Were Here.’ As the 21-year-old sang the track that’s nearly twice as old as he is, video images were projected onto the audience and a tightrope walker safely crossed a set of wires and re-created the “flaming handshake” scene on the cover of the ‘Wish You Were Here’ album.

Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford also joined Sheeran for the performance. Sheeran, a prolific tweeter, made a brief comment on the site after his appearance:

Sheeran had hinted he would be singing with a classic rock band during the closing ceremony, which led many to incorrectly assume he was taking the stage with the Who. The singer-songwriter next returns to the U.S. for another round of tour dates starting on Sept. 8.
