If you're looking for a new place to experience Minnesota's fall colors without having to get out and hike around, this might be the place for you to check out!

When it comes to places to look at the autumn leaves, it seems like a lot of people visit places like near Lutsen on the North Shore, make the loop around Itasca State Park, or travel the Mississippi River Valley in Southeastern Minnesota.

Don't get me wrong, those are all fantastic places to check out the fall colors. They're very popular for a reason! But do you know about this lesser-traveled scenic route in Northern Minnesota that offers some spectacular fall scenery?

Last year, I stumbled onto the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway, which extends from Grand Rapids to Effie in Northern Minnesota. While this isn't a completely unheard-of route for some spectacular scenery, it doesn't get the love a lot of other places in the state seem to get for fall.

There are certainly some notable differences, but the route reminds me of the famous M-41 drive to Copper Harbor in Michigan. The rolling terrain and curvy roads make for some stunning views and cool photo opportunities.

What makes the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway so great?

First, the curvy and hilly terrain the road travels along makes it visually interesting and a joy to drive. Those curves and hills force you to take your time, so you can really soak in all of the beauty and wildlife along the route.

There are a lot of different types of trees along the roadway, which means there are a variety of colors along this route.

So, I've covered the road and the potential for a variety of vibrant hues, but I can't forget to mention the lakes!

There are several lakes that dot the edge of the roadway, with the opportunity to break off the main route into the surrounding George Washington State Forest to see even more nature and wildlife - and do some exploring out of your vehicle if you want.
