While there may still be a good handful of weeks of ice fishing yet this winter season (weather willing and depending on what part of the state you're in), there are some important late-season dates and deadlines you need to know as we move into the late part of the season.

Here are the key dates and deadlines to be aware of for 2026 late-season ice fishing in Minnesota from the Minnesota DNR.

If you're using a fishing shelter this winter, knowing when they need to be off the water is important so you don't end up having your fish house confiscated and/or facing citations or legal action.

It is still legal to use a shelter just for the day after these removal dates, but you can't leave them overnight. The only way they can remain on the ice overnight (from midnight until an hour before sunrise) is if they are occupied or attended.

Inland Waters

When it comes to inland waters, things are pretty straightforward.

There is a dividing line that uses roads as a border. That border is made up of an east-west line formed by U.S. Hwy. 10, east along Hwy. 34 to Minnesota Hwy. 200, east along Hwy. 200 to U.S. Hwy. 2, and east along Hwy. 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.

If you're south of that line, your deadline is 11:59 pm on Monday, March 2, 2026.

If you're north of that line, the deadline is 11:59 pm on Monday, March 16, 2026.

Border Waters

Here's where it gets a little more complicated, because it depends on what border is shared. In order of their arrival, here are the border waters deadlines:

  • Minnesota-Iowa border waters: Friday, February 20, 2026, by 11:59 pm
  • Minnesota-Wisconsin border waters: Sunday, March 1, 202,6 by 11:59 pm
  • Minnesota-North & South Dakota border waters: Thursday, March 5, 20,26 by 11:59 pm
  • Minnesota-Canada border waters: Tuesday, March 31, 2026, by 11:59 pm

Minnesota Fishing Seasons Changing

Seasoned anglers know that late-season ice fishing also comes with certain species of fish becoming off-limits as seasons end.

When it comes to inland waters, the walleye, bass, and northern pike season is now closed, wrapping up on February 22 until the spring opener in May. Meanwhile, perch and panfish like sunfish and crappie remain open year-round.

On border waters, it's a different story. For example, on Canada-Minnesota border waters, the walleye season remains open on many lakes until April, with a pause until the May opener.

There are special rules about specific bodies of water for these and all border waters, so it's best to check the Minnesota DNR fishing regulations to see the rules for the lake you plan to fish on.

Another important reminder as ice season wraps up

As of 2023, there is a law on the books in Minnesota bout littering on the ice.

The Minnesota Statue prohibits leaving garbage, cigarette filters, fireworks debris, sewage, the body of a dead animal, and other debris on the ice. Penalties include fines of $100 per violation.
