Is Duluth the Next City to Charge a Fee or Ban Plastic Bags All Together?
Retailers in the city of Minneapolis may soon be charging a fee of .05 cents per plastic bag when you make a purchase at any store. The city council still needs to vote on this, is Duluth next?
Could Duluth be the next city to completely pull the plug on plastic bags or install some type of fee? The new trend lately has been individual cities taking it upon themselves to impose taxes on certain items like sugary drinks, menthol cigarettes(Minneapolis) and now plastic bags.
I completely understand that plastic bags are a huge hazard to the environment and end up in lakes, streams, oceans and in the woods as well harming wildlife, but for me I honestly love the convenience of them. I am not against buying cloth grocery bags I see them all the time, but I reuse the plastic bags for many things around the house.
I see this trend becoming nationwide very soon, just like styrofoam containers are very rarely used anymore. Our landfills are getting full and unless these bags are recycled somehow they do end up in a landfill. For myself If I was charged per bag I would for sure use that as motivation to start bringing my own bags. Yes, that is sad but true that it would take something like this for me to stop using them.
What do you think? Do you already use your own bags? Would a fee motivate you to stop using plastic bags, let me know in the comment section below.
