It might not feel like it but fall is here. With temperatures soaring well above normal into the end of September, it's feeling anything but a change of the seasons.

However, there are some other signs that fall is here in the Northland and they are a little bittersweet. Sigh.

Closed For The Season

Unfortunately, two of our favorite seasonal businesses have officially closed for the season. We have to get through another Northland winter before we can feast at these spots again.

Goodbye, Gordy's Hi-Hat! The Cloquet staple closed for its 64th season on Sunday (September 29th). The restaurant always closes for the winter and reopens in the spring.

Gordy's serves classics like cheeseburgers, fries and malts. They've had a really successful season and I will definitely miss eating there until they reopen in the spring.

The second seasonal favorite closing for the season? That would be Portland Malt Shoppe. The spot is located right along the shores of Lake Superior and it is so good that the line is always really long.

This season was extra special as they announced a handful of new ice cream flavors. They also added a new malt flavor, too! While ice cream isn't really a winter treat, I will still miss Portland Malt Shoppe this winter.

All we have to do is make it through another long Duluth winter. At least we have some inspiration to do so!

Ways A Minnesota Summer Is Much Like Winter

It might not seem like it on the surface, but a Minnesota summer has a lot in common with a Minnesota winter. From a strictly meteorological standpoint, they are the polar opposites of each other. However, many common themes, elements, and principals thread their way through each of the seasons.

Some of the similarities involve the way we prep for each of the seasons. Other shared items involve rituals, chores, finances, and yes - even weather. (I know, you're thinking - how can the weather be the same in the summer and the winter; trust me - it can be - read on to find out how.)

One thing is for certain, though, as to how Minnesotans deal with summer and winter: True to our nature, we confront and embrace each of the seasons all at the same time.
