Shoutout to my neighborhood Kwik Trip – I spend more time and money there than I probably should, but it’s a block from my house and has everything I need. The other day I was waiting in line to pay for snacks when I saw an employee get on the intercom and scold a customer.

"Scold" might be too harsh of a word, but she firmly told the customer at pump 7 to stop doing something I’ve done numerous times. When it was my turn to pay, I jokingly asked her what that was about, and her explanation made perfect sense.

The chain headquartered in La-Crosse is known for its commitment to fresh grocery items like milk, bread, eggs, and produce, and is always rolling out new items on the 'hot spot' where customers can grab a quick lunch or dinner. For many gas is the last thing they think of when they think about this gas station.

She asked the customer to get out of the car and watch the pump while it was filling. I’d be lying if I said I’ve never sat in my car to keep warm, but after her explanation, I won't make that mistake again.

The employee told me the automatic shut-off valves on gas pumps can fail in extremely cold weather, leading to spills.

This isn't just a Kwik Trip issue – it can happen at any gas station.

The employees have to clean up these messes and some customers will argue about having to pay for the spilled gas. Those are headaches that no one should have to deal with. So no matter the temp outside you should always stay by your pump and pay attention while fueling.
