Yesterday, long-time Twin Ports sports broadcaster Tom Hansen announced he will be leaving his nightly television post with the Northland's NewsCenter to pursue a new career and spend more time with his family.

Tom has been with KBJR TV and the Northland's NewsCenter for nearly three decades as a sports broadcaster. Tom has also been active in many other aspects of Twin Ports sports journalism, which has included providing television and radio play-by-play and contributing as a writer with ESPN Radio 560 WEBC. With his announcement, Tom offered this statement:

Dear Northland Sports fans,

For more than 27 years I have been blessed to cover your games, teams, players and coaches on radio, TV, online and in newspaper in news, weather and sporting events.

I love the job; always have, always will.

But I love my family more.

They have sacrificed so much over the years. I have missed birthdays, anniversaries, sporting events, team banquets, parent/teacher conferences and much more due to the hours we keep here in TV.

I want to be a better husband and father.

In an effort to do that, I need to change the hours I work so I can spend more time with them.

I am announcing my resignation as Sports Director and will move into retirement from my media work. I hope to still do play-by-play for college games and or high school games for the Northland's NewsCenter.

I have accepted the position of Associate University Relations Specialist job with UW-Superior.

My family and I want to thank you for your support, encouragement and prayers over the years. Many of you know of my wife's battle with cancer, in which she is now approaching two years cancer free....I recently lost my father to cancer, who was my hero.

Those events have given me time to reflect on what is truly important in life, and that's family. I want to be a better family man.

I wish you all the best today and always, and thank you for the 27 plus years I have had in media work. I will never forget you.

Keep Smile'n Northland

I will
