I don't know if I am dating myself by talking about this, do you remember the old London Inn?

Bizapedia says London Inn Inc. first filed to do business in Duluth, Minnesota in 1963. They typically served fast food. Families and kids ate there. I mean high school and college-aged kids. Mostly on the weekends.

London Inn was located at 1623 London Road, which was later replaced by Godfather's Pizza, which was itself replaced by a Chinese restaurant. People always talked about how good the french fries were, but whenever I bring up the name London Inn, everyone immediately talks about the onion rings they served there.

The more I heard about how good the onion rings were, I felt I needed to do some research. I know someone has to have that recipe. Someone must have worked there at some point and saw what went into the onion rings. Hopefully, it was a recipe and not something that was shipped in.

I searched and couldn't find anything on the London Inn, let alone the onion ring recipe. Then someone answered me on Facebook. They had the old recipe, and they used to work there. So, thanks to them, here is the recipe.

London Inn Drive-in Onion Rings

  • 4 jumbo onions
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 3 teaspoons Lawry's seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • 1-pint milk

Peel and slice onions into 1/2 inch thickness. Pop-out centers and rings. Put all batter ingredients.

In a mixer bowl and blend thoroughly. [Batter is thicker than pancake mix.] Coat onion slices well.

Fry rings until golden brown, salt with Lawry's seasoned salt.
