Betting Markets Think Minnesota’s Governor Race Is Settled
The race for the next Governor of Minnesota is officially underway, and even though it is still early in the process, betting markets are already signaling what could become a runaway.
Neither party has selected a nominee yet, but the race has already produced dramatic turns. The biggest moment so far came with Tim Walz dropping out of the race amid fraud allegations, followed by a sitting U.S. Senator stepping in to replace him.
A Major Name Enters the Race in Minnesota
After much speculation, Amy Klobuchar announced her candidacy for Governor of Minnesota today. The four-term U.S. Senator has been a fixture in Minnesota politics for nearly 30 years, and her entry instantly changed the shape of the race.

Almost immediately, Klobuchar became the clear favorite in betting markets, jumping ahead of other potential Democratic contenders before most campaigns have even had time to introduce themselves to voters outside the Twin Cities.
Betting Markets React Fast to MN Race
Prediction exchanges such as Kalshi, where users can wager on real-world outcomes like elections, sports, and award shows, saw a rapid shift after Walz’s exit and Klobuchar’s announcement.

Kalshi currently lists Klobuchar at a 96 percent chance to become the Democratic nominee. That is a dramatic change from earlier in the morning on January 5, when her odds sat at zero percent. Around 11 a.m., after Walz made his announcement, her odds surged to roughly 80 percent and continued climbing.
Markets are also heavily favoring Democrats in the general election. Current odds give Democrats a 91 percent chance to win the governor’s race, and those odds have not dropped below roughly 67 percent since the beginning of the year.
If you put stock in betting markets, the race may look close to decided already. Still, the early volatility is also a reminder that these odds can swing fast. With months of campaigning ahead, Minnesota voters from Duluth to Rochester will ultimately decide whether the markets are seeing the future, or simply overreacting to a headline.
