Winter Storm Watch Issued With Over A Foot Of Snow Possible In Parts Of Minnesota This Weekend
The picture is getting clearer for this weekend's winter storm event I first wrote about yesterday that could lead to potentially heavy snow across parts of Minnesota.
As the weekend approaches, the National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a winter storm watch for Northeastern Minnesota in anticipation of some potentially heavy snow at the end of the weekend.
Here's an updated look at how much snow could fall and what parts of Minnesota could see the heaviest snow.
What's the snow timeline for this weekend?
Similar to what I shared yesterday, the daytime hours on Saturday look nice for people looking to travel or do something outdoors. We'll see temperatures in the 30s and plenty of sun.

Saturday evening is when snow pushes into Northern Minnesota, expected to start around of after dinnertime depending on where in the region you are. Snow will continue throughout the day on Sunday, wrapping up through the late parts of Sunday and into early Monday from west to east.

Some of the precipitation during the middle of this weather event could be a rain-snow mix. The greatest threat is in areas along or south of Highway 2 during Sunday, with places like Duluth, Grand Rapids, Brainerd; and Solon Springs, Ashland, and Hayward in Wisconsin included in those wintery mix chances.
How much snow will Minnesota get this weekend?
The latest update from the National Weather Service shows the heaviest snow falling in the Minnesota Arrowhead, with the Iron Range, Duluth, and the North Shore likely to get amounts as high as a foot by the time things wrap up.
The mixed precipitation part of this weekend's system complicates forecast totals. Snow totals as low as a couple of inches on the low end of what could fall and as high as a foot or more along the North Shore on the high end of what we could see are all part of the forecast.
As of right now, the National Weather Service's best forecast is anticipating snow totals like this across Northern Minnesota:
Grand Portage: 7-13 inches
Silver Bay: 6-11 inches
Duluth: 5-9 inches (lower amounts near the lake, higher on top of the hill)
Iron Range: 5-9 inches
Grand Rapids: 3-7 inches
International Falls: 3-7 inches
Bemidji: 2-6 inches
Walker: 2-6 inches
Brainerd: 1-4 inches
Hinckley: 1-4 inches
Across the border into Wisconsin, most of the South Shore could see 2-4 inches of snow, with places on the Bayfield Peninsula in the higher terrain maybe seeing a little more.
