Superior To Kick Off ” Sweet Streets” Program For Kids This Weekend
Children riding their bikes while wearing a helmet could be ticketed by the Superior Police Department this summer. This would be a nice ticket though, which they can turn around and use to get a free scoop of Ice cream at Sweeden Sweets on Tower Avenue in Superior.
The Sweet Streets Programming is rolling out in 2 phases. The first one is happening this Saturday June 20 from 1-3 p.m in the Superior Public Library parking lot, where FREE bike helmets will be given away to children ages 5 to 14. Essentia Health is donating 100 helmets to the cause, children must be present in order to make sure the helmet fits properly so it's effective.
According to data from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation "Wearing a helmet can eliminate 85% of head injuries from bicycle crashes or falls."
Councilor Jenny Van Sickle has been working on this program for about a year and said to Superior Telegram " I want to make sure kids are set up to succeed, If you don’t have a helmet, you’re not even eligible. The goal of the program is to promote safe and healthy activity, increase foot traffic in small businesses and encourage positive police relationships in the community."
Police officers will start handing out tickets to kids starting in July. Sweeden Sweets has donated 250 tokens for ice cream, but if additional sponsors would like to come on board, it would help extend the program through the fall when kids go back to school.
