Surprise! 20th Century Fox has delivered the first full trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence (not related to Toho’s Godzilla: Resurgence, unfortunately) a wee bit earlier than previously planned. The trailer was set to debut in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens later this week, but early Christmas has come early, and our ol’ alien pals are back.

Jeff Goldblum is really the centerpiece of this trailer, which explains that he’s spent his time since the original film using the aliens’ leftover weapons to build better weapons to protect the earth from any future threats — but it’s not enough. The aliens are returning, so it’s time to get the band back together, with Bill Pullman’s former President Whitmore, his daughter (It Follows star Maika Monroe) and the fighter pilot son (Jessie Usher) of Will Smith’s absentee Captain Daniel Hillard.

While this trailer looks quite self-serious, there’s no denying that Jeff Goldblum in a space suit with Liam Hemsworth is just plain silly. The original Independence Day was campy and fun, and although our first look at Resurgence seems a little more somber, I have a feeling that this thing is going to be outrageously ridiculous — it is directed by Roland Emmerich, after all.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996’s Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally.

But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day: Resurgence also stars Joey King, Vivica A. Fox, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg (yeah!), Sela Ward, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch, and hits theaters on June 24, 2016.
