The current Minnesota Drivers license to not meet Federal Guidelines and so an extension has been made until January 22nd 2018. Your current Minnesota drivers license could become an issue after that date If you are trying to fly. However the state has requested an extension beyond that date until October 2018 to become compliant with the law.

So what is Real ID? It was established in 2005 to set minimum security standards for federally accepted identification. Since these drivers license and state ID's are issued by each individual state they may differ in information, like the state of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Legislature had been bickering back and forth for months on end, but finally agreed to the change.  They are hoping that these ID's will be available no later than October 1st 2018. For right now you can get a enhanced drivers license or Identification card  for $15 extra.
