Opening Date Set For Duluth Planet Fitness – Here’s What To Know About The New Gym

Back in the spring months of 2022, we learned that the fitness chain Planet Fitness was eying up a location in the Twin Ports area. The gym franchise expanding to Duluth would add to the company's existing 29 locations across Minnesota.

While the company has a major presence in the Twin Cities area, Planet Fitness also has a presence in places like St. Cloud, Brainerd, and Moorhead.

The expansion to Duluth will bring their brand of "high-quality fitness at an affordable cost" workout space, offering competition to places like Anytime Fitness already well established in the Twin Ports area.

The management of Planet Fitness told the Duluth News Tribune (paywall) that the Duluth area has been in their sights for quite some time. That dream of a Twin Ports area gym is now becoming a reality.

What does Planet Fitness offer?

Planet Fitness brands itself as an affordable workout destination with a large variety of equipment and fitness space, along with training available. Their website says they " strive to create a workout environment where everyone feels accepted and respected".

The Duluth location, located at 2327 Mountain Shadow Drive, replaces what was once the Country Lanes North blowing alley.

The 22,000-square-foot space will have 110 cardio machines, including things like treadmills, ellipticals, ascent machines, bikes, rowers, and stepmills. Along with that, there will be 75 pieces of weight & strength equipment, tanning stations, massage chairs, HydroMassage, TVs around the facility, and locker spaces. 

How much are memberships for Planet Fitness?

Planet Fitness offers two tiers of memberships, both of which they say are no-commitment, month-to-month memberships. They have a basic membership they call their "Classic" membership and a more expansive version they call "PF Black Card".

Classic Membership - For $10 per month (plus taxes and fees) you'll get unlimited access to your "home club".

PF Black Card Membership - For $24.99 per month (plus taxes and fees) you'll be able to access any Planet Fitness location on an unlimited basis as well as other benefits, which include:

• Ability to bring a guest anytime
• Use of massage chairs
• Use of HydroMassage stations
• Use of tanning
• Other perks

What do those taxes and fees include? 

There is a $1, one-time startup fee, a $49 annual membership fee, and the application of state and local tax.

When does the Duluth Planet Fitness open?

After some speculation they'd be opening at the beginning of October, we now know when they plan to open.

The gym will be holding a grand opening on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Doors will open in the morning, with the opportunity for people to check out the facility.

What will the hours be for Planet Fitness?

The Duluth Planet Fitness will be open 7 days a week, operating on what the manager calls a "24-5" schedule.

What that means is that the gym will be open 24 hours a day for 5 days, then going to an abbreviated schedule for the weekend. Here's what that looks like:

• Monday-Friday: Gym opens at 5 am on Monday morning, staying open 24 hours a day through 9 pm on Friday night.
• Saturday & Sunday: Opens at 6 am, closing at 8 pm
