The end of the first week of March has been a rough one in terms of weather impacts.

A combination of freezing fog and freezing mist left dangerous skating rink-like conditions for the Thursday morning commute in Duluth and other parts of the Twin Ports area, and the ongoing cool and misty conditions have only made it get worse through the later parts of Thursday and into the day today (Friday, March 6).

Going along with slippery roads and sidewalks, scattered power outages have impacted the area. Thursday night, Proctor was one of the epicenters of power outages, with numerous people in the Proctor area frustrated by the ice-induced blackout.

Someone driving around in the dark in Proctor last night captured the moment when power came back on, well after 11 pm.

Continued ice accumulation overnight and during the day on Friday has been adding to the weight on trees, causing branches to break off and power outages to happen throughout the day. Our news partners at FOX 21 shared one scary moment as a big branch fell out of a tree like a spear into the ground in someone's yard.

As of the time of this article on Friday afternoon, Minnesota Power is reporting around 40 power outages in the Duluth area.

While some of the individual reported outages aren't impacting large numbers of customers, a few of them certainly are.

Some of those outages are impacting streetlights in neighborhoods, and some of Duluth's radio and TV stations (including B105 and the FAN 106.5's AM signal) are dealing with off-air issues related to the power outages.

Outages span from Gary to Lakewood Township, with the greatest concentration of customers being impacted in an area from West Duluth to Northland Country Club in East Duluth. There are outages in other places, including Midway Township, Hermantown, and even in Silver Bay.

Minnesota Power has several crews out, working on outages as quickly as possible. For many of the reported outages, Minnesota Power anticipates having electricity restored by 6 pm, though those are just estimates.

You can see the latest information about outages and repair estimates on the Minnesota Power outage map.

Additional freezing drizzle is possible yet on Friday before precipitation changes to all snow overnight Friday, wrapping up by Saturday morning. The good news is that after a couple of days dealing with these icy conditions, relief appears to be on the way soon.

Clear conditions and temperatures around 40 on Saturday, and even warmer temps on Sunday (around 50) will not only end our icing risk, but will also help melt the ice we've managed to collect over the last few days.

The 16 Least Snowy Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 16 winters with the lowest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "least snowy winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
