This week in 1992 Whoopi Goldberg had the number one movie. the 65th National Spelling Bee took place, and Mary J. Blige released her first top ten hit.

Opening at number one at the box office this weekend was 'Sister Act' starring Whoopi Goldberg. The film was about a singer who witnesses a mob crime and gets put in protective custody at a traditional convent to hide out as a nun where she has trouble fitting in. The lead role originally went to Bette Midler but she turned it down and a couple different rewrites with half a dozen screenwriters later, the role went to Whoopi. The film was a huge success and grosses over $230 million at the box office.

On this day in '92 the 65th National Spelling Bee took place. Amanda Goad from Richmond, VA won with the word lyceum.

Mary J. Blige realeased 'Real Love' as the second single from her debut album. The song was her first top ten hit and reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
