A grim discovery near Central Entrance in Duluth yesterday as a landowner finds a dead body in a shed.

Duluth Police were called to a property on E. Palm Street behind Gallery Dental upon the discovery of a dead body located inside a shed on the property. The body was found lying on a couch that was in the shed.

I reached out to the Duluth Police Department about the incident, Public Information Officer Mattie Hjelseth said, "This incident appears to be an apparent suspected overdose. We are awaiting toxicology from the ME’s office to confirm."

The property owner says that they have previously had to call authorities because of people using the property as an encampment, which is a problem all over the Twin Ports.

According to a press release from the Duluth Police Department, they have responded to 37 opioid overdose deaths in the city so far in 2023, which is an 11-year high. In total, there were 35 overdoses in 2022.

The drug Narcan is used by first responders to treat overdoses, once administered, it can quickly reverse the effects of opioids and save lives, the Duluth Police Department says that it has used Narcan 110 times as of November 7th and it was effective in 105 of the uses.

The Duluth Police Department with help from the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force has seized a record number of opioid (fentanyl) pills, powder fentanyl, and meth
already this year. Lieutenant Dave Drozdowski says, "DPD uses a holistic approach of enforcement, education/prevention, and recovery to provide resources to those suffering
from Substance Use Disorders. Resources include recovery support services, mental
health services, and harm reduction services such as access to free fentanyl test strips and Narcan.”
