The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is adding three more lakes to the ever-growing list of waterways being invaded by one of the world's most invasive aquatic species.

According to the DNR, about 4% of Minnesota lakes are currently dealing with this invasive species that can cause serious harm to the ecosystem where they are introduced. The latest discoveries were brought to the attention of the DNR from some observative citizens.

The three new additions to Minnesota's infested waters list are Union Lake, near Erskine in Polk County and First Silver Lake, near the town of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County, and Heilberger Lake, near Erhard in Otter Tail County. All three lakes now have confirmed  presence of zebra mussels.

A concerned lake property owner first sounded the alarm after finding a zebra mussel in Union Lake. What followed was a startling revelation by DNR staff, who discovered more than 15 zebra mussels near the public water access, far from the initial report site. This finding has prompted immediate action to prevent further spread.

In First Silver Lake, another alert citizen brought evidence directly to the DNR, leading to a detailed investigation. The situation in Heilberger Lake mirrored these discoveries, with zebra mussels found both on native mussels and at public access points.

Zebra mussels are a highly invasive species known for their rapid reproduction and ability to attach to virtually any hard surface. They disrupt local ecosystems by outcompeting native species for food and habitat, and they can cause significant damage to infrastructure by clogging water intakes and other submerged equipment. Their presence in lakes can also impact recreational activities, as their sharp shells can litter beaches and make swimming areas hazardous.

Preventing the spread of zebra mussels requires vigilance from everyone who uses Minnesota’s lakes. Boaters are urged to inspect their watercraft and equipment for zebra mussels and other invasive species before moving them between bodies of water. Draining all water from boats and disposing of unwanted bait in the trash are also crucial steps in preventing the spread.

The DNR continues to monitor and manage invasive species across the state, working closely with local communities and stakeholders to protect Minnesota’s aquatic ecosystems. Public awareness and cooperation are essential in these efforts to keep Minnesota’s lakes healthy and enjoyable for all.
