It is no secret that weather in the Northland is all over the map. We can have brutally cold temperatures and also brutally hot and humid conditions.

While we are known for our rough winters, like I said, we still see heat waves each summer like everybody else. With that said, the National Weather Service of Duluth issued a reminder to residents on how to stay safe in the heat.

They issued the reminder on their Twitter account Thursday (July 30th), stating that heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths more often than not. Here are a few tips they offer up for you to keep in mind the remainder of the summer:

  • Avoid doing any strenuous exercise outside on hot and humid days.
  • Wear light clothing, avoiding heavy materials and dark colors on warm days.
  • Drink as much water as possible.
  • Look out for warning signs of heat-related illness, like heat cramps or exhaustion on hot days.
  • Never leave a pet or person unattended in a vehicle on a warm day.

While we may not be the hottest place on earth, we have had a stretch of uncomfortably hot weather already this summer. The tips may seem simple but it is very easy to let things slide under the radar when the sun is shining.

In case you're curious, the Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting an August that is all over the place, with periods of warm AND cool conditions. I guess we will have to wait and see what the month holds for us.
