When Is The Best Time To Visit Northern Minnesota For Peak Fall Colors In 2025?
Whether you're a local trying to plan an outing with the family or someone from further away looking to organize a trip to enjoy the unforgettable fall colors the wilderness of Northern Minnesota has to offer, knowing when to expect peak fall colors can be immensely helpful.
Unfortunately, predicting the fall colors is not an exact science. There are a lot of factors that can change the timeline from year to year, making it hard to pinpoint a precise week for the best viewing.
Longer-term variables like the amount of rain through the summer season to more immediate things like temperature fluctuations in the fall season, all play a role in not only the timing of peak fall colors, but also how vibrant they will be.
This year's weather impacts on the fall colors
The Minnesota DNR's climate summary for this summer (May 1 - August 25) shows a relatively normal season. While some regions vary, the state was slightly warmer and a little wetter than "normal".
Specifically in Northern Minnesota, conditions through the summer season were about 1 degree warmer than normal on average, with slightly less rain than normal - though much more rain than we've gotten in the drought summers of recent years. Things started off dry this spring, but later-season rain brought us close to average overall.

Summer storms may have led to some leaf and limb losses in places, but there wasn't excessive rain in Northern Minnesota that would cause fungal or other problems for trees.
That said, the hazy days from wildfire smoke might dampen the vibrancy of fall colors a little, as the reduction in sunlight the trees got during the summer can have negative impacts on photosynthesis and pigment production.
While the greatest factors on fall colors are the weather conditions as we move into fall, the summer season was reasonably favorable to a good show this fall in Northern Minnesota.

This fall is expected to be mild, which might push back the start of fall colors a little, but our recent cooler and more fall-like weather with warm-ish sunny days and cool evenings is exactly what spurs trees on to put on a good autumn show. Heck, there have even been some individual trees already turning to their fall hues through the month of August.
Some of that happens each year, with individual trees changing early due to any number of factors, but things aren't going widespread yet.
Predicting 2025's fall colors in Northern Minnesota
Much of what goes into predicting this year's peak fall colors is based on historical data. The Minnesota DNR's Fall Color Finder uses 10 years of fall colors information to provide a best-guess based on average peak dates over the last decade.
Based on that, here is when, on average, peak fall colors usually happen.
Northwestern Minnesota
Historically, around September 21 is about when you'll really start to notice fall colors developing, with 25-50% color. September 26 is when the Minnesota DNR says widespread colors at 50-75% tend to occur.
Pockets of peak fall color (75-100%) start to develop as early as September 28, reaching peak color by October 5. If this fall's weather ends up being a little warmer than average, you could anticipate seeing things reaching peak a little later.
Northcentral Minnesota
Similar to Northwestern Minnesota, historical data suggests that around September 21 is when places like Grand Rapids, International Falls, Walker, and the western portion of the Iron Range will start noticing fall color with 25-50% color.

By September 25, on average, things start shifting into higher gear, with trees getting closer to 50-75% color. Between September 28 and October 5 is when things usually bloom into full fall color (75-100%).
Northeastern Minnesota
Influences from Lake Superior generally tend to delay peak fall colors compared to the rest of Northern Minnesota. While pockets of trees, especially away from the lake, might turn earlier, September 28 is when much of the trees along the North Shore and throughout the Arrowhead get to 25-50% color.
The first few days of October is generally when Northeastern Minnesota will see my favorite 50-75% color, with widespread peak fall colors usually hitting the North Shore between October 5 and October 9.
Again, if it is a warmer fall, this might push dates back a little, but a general rule of thumb for most of Northern Minnesota is that the first week of October is likely to be your most colorful, if you needed to place a bet on a week.
