The Superior Police Department has announced the launch of an iPhone app to allow the public to anonymously share information with the department.

The Superior Police Department press release explains that the app is named “SPDTip.” The app will enables the public to send anonymous tips to the police department. The police can respond back, and have an anonymous “chat”, if the tipster chooses to have continued dialog. “SPDTip” puts a powerful new crime fighting tool into the hands of the community for all ages and demographics.

This program works along with the department’s existing text messaging service known as “tip411” which is provided by a Saint Paul, MN based company named Citizen Observer. With “tip411’ the community has been able to make anonymous tips to the police by texting the word “SPDTIP”, followed by the tip, to the number 847111 (TIP411).

With “tip411” the public can also submit anonymous tips via the web by logging into the department’s tip page HERE and selecting the “SUBMIT A TIP” link. This link is also available directly from the Superior Police Department’s web page HERE under the “Anonymous Tips/Alerts” tab.

Starting today a new method of reporting tips to the Superior Police Department has been added with launching of the “SPDTip” iPhone app. The department’s land line based tip line, 715-395-7468, is still available as well. All tips are received anonymously but it should be noted that this system is not monitored 24/7 so emergencies should still be reported to the standard “911” system.

Community members with iPhones are encouraged to visit the Apple App Store from their phones and search for “SPDTip”.

An Android version of the application is in development and should be available by early 2013.
