Teenager Killed When Motorist Plowed Into People in Minneapolis
Minneapolis, MN (KROC--AM News) - A teenage girl was fatally injured early today when a hit and run driver plowed a vehicle through a group of people in downtown Minneapolis.
The Minneapolis Police Department says the deadly incident was reported around 12:25 AM on Hennepin Avenue and 5th Street, which is about three blocks from Target Field. A news release says 6 people were transported to a hospital and one of the victims, a 16-year-old girl, died from her injuries. At least one of the other injured parties had what were described as potential life-threatening injuries.
According to Minneapolis police, a preliminary investigation found that there was an altercation between a group of people in the middle of the intersection. A woman then got into a vehicle and drove in reverse on Hennepin Avenue before driving the wrong way on 5th Street North into the crowd.
The news release indicates the motorist then drove out of the downtown area and was followed by witnesses. Minneapolis police, with assistance from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota State Patrol were able to stop the suspect and take her into custody in a residential neighborhood of North Minneapolis about a mile from the crime scene.
Minneapolis police reported the woman was booked into the Hennepin County jail on suspicion of murder.
