UNREAL! Minnesota’s Craziest April Snowfall Buried Cities Under Feet of Snow
It's April 1st, and this is no joke: we are talking about a significant snowstorm impacting Minnesota over the next 36 hours. However, this April has a long way to go if it wants to compete with a past record breaker.
The National Weather Service in Duluth is forecasting up to 14 inches of snow by tomorrow night. Once this system passes, the next 10 days look very spring-like, so it is very doubtful that we will see the amount of snow we got hammered with back in April 2013.

Remembering Minnesota's Record April Snow of 2013
Thirteen years ago, the Twin Ports area received an extraordinary amount of snow during April. By mid-April 2013, Duluth had already gotten nearly 42 inches of wet, heavy snow.

A good portion of this record breaking month came during a storm on April 18th and 19th, when the Duluth International Airport recorded 17.7 inches. Other areas, like Babbitt, Minnesota, got buried in 23 inches of fresh snow.
This storm shut down the area while citizens and cities dug out from the historical snowfall. April wasn't finished delivering a winter beat down though; by the end of the month, the official snow total in Duluth was 50.8 inches.
Comparing Snowy Winters in Duluth
April was exceptionally snowy that year, but the rest of the 2012-2013 winter was not record breaking overall. Duluth ended that season with 129.4 inches, about 43 inches above average. The most snowfall recorded in Duluth during one winter happened more recently; the 2022–2023 season broke the record with 140.1 inches.
So far, the 2024-2025 winter season has seen a total of just under 45 inches of snow, which is over 30 inches below normal for the Duluth area.
