Yesterday the University of Wisconsin-Superior had one of their 4 virtual town hall meetings with 160 of their faculty and staff. In the meeting, the administration laid out their plans for intermittent furloughs that will likely begin on July 1st. According to a press release from UW-Superior, the furloughs are due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and financial losses. Under the plan that is being considered, every employee would forfeit one paid day for every two week pay period. It is a difficult dicision according to Chancellor Renee Wacther.

“I know how hard everyone has been working and I so very greatly appreciate that effort. We truly have the most dedicated and amazing people, and that’s what makes this so very hard, but things are moving quickly, and we must take action now.”

Employees are also allowed to take voluntary furloughs that would begin immediately and extend through June 2020.

UWS is seeing financial losses from enrollment being down. Also housing, dining, and other fees normally collected are no longer coming in due to the pandemic. The university believes that the furloughs can save a million dollars in their budget. They will finalize the plans in the coming weeks, and they ultimately need to be reviewed by the University of Wisconsin system.
