Sad news for Northland pizza lovers arrived Tuesday when Southgate Family Pizzeria, aka Southgate Family "Pete-zeria" in honor of owner Pete Olson, announced they have made the difficult decision to permanently close their doors.

Southgate Family Pizzeria, located at 918 HWY 33 in Cloquet, Minnesota had posted several notices over the past year or so on their official Facebook page that they would be closed on random days.

While the reasons for the temporary closures varied, the most common reason was due to the staffing shortages that have had an unfortunate impact on many area businesses since the pandemic began. In August, 2021, they discontinued their lunch buffet.

Tuesday brought the most disappointing news yet from Southgate Family Pizzeria. They made the following announcement their Facebook page, which at the time had over 1,950 followers:

After a lot of thought we have decided to close the doors of Southgate. Our last day will be Saturday May 14th, 2022. We want to thank all of our customers for the amazing support during this venture!
