Duluth Area Restaurants Offering Viral ‘Soft Serve’ Margaritas
Soft serve margaritas are having a moment right now online.
The trendy cocktail has been going viral online, offering a fun, new texture when compared to a blended margarita or the "on the rocks" variety.
The "soft serve" alcoholic beverage trend has been taking off for a bit now, with the Minnesota State Fair having a soft serve raspberry beer last year that got a lot of viral attention.
The smooth, airy texture is much like soft serve ice cream, but it is actually a frozen boozy cocktail with the same flavor and alcohol you'd expect from a traditional margarita.
The ice cream look of the cocktail (and whatever garnishes that may be added on) make these soft serve margaritas very photogenic, so they're not only fun to...eat? (Drink? Err, let's go with eat), but they are also fun to grab a photo of to share online.
A Duluth area restaurant just jumped on the trend, with its three Twin Ports area locations all adding the viral frozen cocktails in the last few days
Pedro's Grill & Cantina in Cloquet brought the trend to the Northland, with their Cloquet and Superior location both offering soft serve margaritas, plus their new spinoff restaurant, Sabor by Pedro's in Duluth, also offering them.
Pedro's is offering them in lime, strawberry, or (as you can see above), a combination of the two.

I have been digging around to see if there are any other places in the Northland offering these viral cocktails, and I have yet to find any. If you know of one, let me know about it!
So, how are they?
As you'd expect, they serve up this cocktail with a spoon. The texture is very smooth and velvety, just like soft serve ice cream, but it doesn't include any dairy.

How do they accomplish the ice cream feel without using ice cream? There is some special machinery that freezes the beverage with a mix of air to create the right texture and feel.
The flavor is on par with a normal margarita, and it doesn't melt super fast, which is kind of nice. While it is served in a glass you can drink the melted cocktail from, I ordered one with a meal, and it didn't melt a ton, so I could enjoy the novelty of eating it with a spoon even after my meal was gone.
