The stereotypical college meal usually centers around Ramen noodles and peanut butter.  And while that might not be the case in reality, it's a given that preparing food that's both healthy and affordable is often a challenge for most college students.

That's why the community at the University of Wisconsin-Superior decided to do something about it.

A combined partnership that brought together different members of the greater UWS community recently hosted an event that offered "tips for cooking healthy meals on a budget".  Held in the common area of the Yellowjacket Union, the event was a joint effort between the Pruitt Center for Mindfulness and Well Being, TRIP Student Support Services, TRIO McNair, the Yellowjacket Food Pantry, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Members of the general Superior community were also invited to take part.

During the event, staff members from Chartwells - the food service vendor that provides cafeteria meals to students - featured information on how to cook healthy nutritious meals on a budget.  Attendees (students) were provided information on services and resources available to them on campus.

Additionally, Chartwells offered two different cooking demonstrations - one for making healthy smoothies and a second one that showed how to prepare a main course dish.  Free samples and recipe cards were also provided.

Aaron Wainman - UW-Superior Academic Coordinator for TRIO McNair Scholars shared:

"In order to support students who may be dealing with food insecurities, we wanted to partner with the Yellowjacket Food Pantry to bring awareness to resources that our students have available to them.  Through our partnership with the Pruitt Center, we wanted to make sure that students knew how to not only access the pantry, but how to make healthy meals with low and no-cost ingredients."

One of the major elements of the event that organizers hoped was a "take-away", was that there are resources readily available - right on campus.  Wainman offered: "Through this event we were able to raise awareness for the campus resources that we have for students who may be experiencing food insecurity".
