WI Point Restoration Project Makes Progress

The summer-long restoration project to improve Superior's Wisconsin Point continues to roll along - making markable progress. The initial target timeline for completion continues to be mid- to late summer.

According to the City of Superior's website, here's the latest update on which parking lots are open or closed as of June 14 - due to the project:

• Closed: Lots 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17 & 18
• Open: Lots 1, 7, 9, boat ramp, 13, 15, 19 & Superior Entry

City officials ask that users of Wisconsin Point observe and respect any signage in regards to which lots are closed.  In addition, they ask that users stay out of the fenced-off areas as they contain fragile vegetation.  People should also be observant and alert for construction workers.

In regards to the general project:  The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program awarded the City of Superior a grant in July 2017. In total, the city received $1.375 million to use towards restoring the popular recreational site.  Once completed, the scope of the project will include:

• Development of infrastructure to allow public access and protect the sensitive dunes, as well as, the historical sites on the point
• Consolidated parking from 20+ turnouts to approximately four parking areas
• Restoration and re-vegetation of dunes
• Removal of invasive plants
• Boardwalks installed over the dunes for beach access across the sensitive ecosystem
• ADA compliancy
• Allouez Bay shoreline will be stabilized
