Popular Minnesota Cider Maker Issues Product Recall For One Of Their Products
A popular Minnesota-made cider brand announced a recall for one of its products, letting customers know about some potentially explosive outcomes spurred on by the cause of this recall.
Duluth-based Wild State Cider announced on Wednesday they are issuing a voluntary recall "out of an abundance of caution" of their Birdie Honeyberry Lemonade over concerns over something discovered in the brewing process that could cause the contents to be under extra pressure.
The concern, as explained in a Facebook post, is that it had come to their attention that a small number of cans of this Birdie Honeyberry Lemonade may be under pressure due to "a possible unexpected fermentation of yeast present in fresh fruit".
The company says it believes the issue stems from insufficient pasteurization, which can cause fermentation in warm cans that can put the cans and their contents under extra pressure.
Because of this discovery, the Northern Minnesota cider company is asking anyone who may have purchased cans of this product to safely dispose of it and seek a refund.
What if I drank some of this product?
In a FAQ document published on its website, Wild State Cider says there are no safety concerns from consuming the product.
If you happened to have drank some of the recalled beverage, the flavor may be impacted and the level of pressure in the can can be increased, but they this doesn't mean you should be concerned about getting sick or any pathogens.
Wild State says "Because the cans are unstable, we do not recommend drinking Birdie Honeyberry Lemonade".
How does Wild State recommend disposing of the product?
Wild State recommends gently placing unopened cans of the beverage in a concealed box or plastic bag before disposing of it to prevent the contents of the cans from being released under pressure.
What about getting a refund?
Don't worry, you're not just throwing the product out and wasting the money you spent on the beverages.
Wild State says refunds will be issued for impacted products. So, how do you get a refund?
They say if you purchased any Birdie Honeyberry Lemonade at their Duluth taproom or from their website, you should send them an email at info@wildstatecider.com for a refund.
If you bought the impacted beverage from another place, the cider maker says they will provide a replacement product of equal value. They ask that you provide a receipt from the retailer and a photo of the product you disposed of to their location in Duluth, or they say you can request a refund from the place where you purchased the beverages if you can't make it to their taproom.
