Timing is everything. This holds very true for this dad and his young son, who snapped a selfie at the 2017 Duluth Air Show that ended up going viral. The no-look selfie with the fast-flying jets in the photo is pretty impressive!
See the selfie here.
Duluth doesn't get many big shows that aren't country or classic rock. When Flo Rida announced he would be doing a show at Bayfront Festival Park, a lot of people got excited about enjoying an end-of-summer show at Bayfront that offered a different musical flavor to the area.
Days before the show was set to happen, Flo Rida announced that this, and a number of other shows would be cancelled around the country. Hopefully we'll see someone come in 2018.
A string of violence and violent crimes in the Duluth area inspired Ian, a lifelong Duluth resident, to reflect on those news events and what had been happening in the community. Those thoughts resonated with many of you as well on social media and on our website.
Popular West Duluth breakfast hotspot Randy's Cafe mysteriously closed in August, with a sign saying "temporarily closed". Ian investigated to see what was going on.
Was it an otter or muskie? An 11 year-old girl was attacked by something in Island Lake this summer, leaving severe gashes on her foot. Initially the family assumed the attack was from an otter, but the doctor that treated the girl suggested it might have been a large fish like a muskie. This is just one of a handful of attacks see on Island Lake in recent years.
There are some truly amazing homes in the Northland. This muli-million dollar "lake home" tucked into the trees between Highway 61 and Lake Superior near Silver Bay is definitely one of them. Up for sale for the low price of $5.495 million, you can enjoy creature comforts like a steam shower, infrared sauna, and treetop studio in a ruggedly beautiful setting. Anyone who has driven Highway 61 knows there isn't much land between the highway and Lake Superior. How they managed to tuck all of this between the lake and road in an inconspicuous way is pretty amazing. You'd never see it from the road.
Ian, our resident West Duluthian, found a video that depicts what West Duluth looked like back in 1984. Oh, how things have changed!
After seeing commercial on a Duluth TV station for a product called "Trumpy Bear, Cooper had to do a little investigating. The commercial seemed way too much like an SNL bit to be believed to be a real commercial. It turns out many of you were wondering the same thing. Yes, Trumpy Bear is for real.
The immensely popular Water Park of America announced it would be closing in January of 2017 to renovate and reopen under new ownership and a new name. While the news that they would be closing was sad for families that enjoyed trips to the Bloomington destination, many were excited when they found out that Great Wolf Lodge would be taking over the property and bringing a number of exciting changes.
The new Great Wolf Lodge held their grand opening in December, and our own Tony Hart had the opportunity to check out the facility as part of the opening ceremonies.
Surprise! Northern Minnesota doesn't seem like the type of place you'd find a nude campground. That said, the nudists among us in the Great White North still need a place to congregate, and they do indeed have one. Ian shared this fun fact with our audience, and you responded. This was the most visited story of the year. Not sure what that might say about 2017, but it clearly caught a lot of people's attention.
