Simone Biles Helped Coordinate Getting St. Paul Native Suni Lee’s Dad A New Electric Wheelchair
Simone Biles appeared on the Today Show this morning to talk about how she arranged to help out fellow teammate Suni Lee's father who is paralyzed. He received a brand new $100,000 electric wheelchair. In 2019 Lee's father, Houa John Lee fell off a ladder while helping a friend trim a tree, resulting in numerous injuries — including paralysis from the chest down.
The story behind Suni Lee's family is incredible as he and the other members of their family made huge sacrifices in order for her to do gymnastics and eventually become a Gold Medal Champion. During the Olympics this year a very young Suni was practicing on a homemade balance beam that her father made for her in their backyard.
Houa Lee has been using a manual wheelchair since his accident. Biles reached out to the TODAY show to see if they could help her coordinate efforts in order to get Houa a customized Motorized wheelchair. And together they made it happen.
Bring Me The News reported Biles message from the show:
I love your daughter Suni so much and I know how much she loves you. You have done so much for her so I reached out to my friends at the TODAY Show to see if we could do something special for you.
The 2020 Olympics thrust Suni Lee into the spotlight especially after Simone Biles bowed out of the competition, but she showed her fighting spirit by walking away with three gold medals and established herself as the best in the world. What an amazing gesture on the part of Biles who shows the true spirit of being there for a teammate and her family.
