Heavy Snow Ahead: 30 Minnesota, Wisconsin Counties Now Under Winter Storm Warnings
As this week's winter storm gets closer, there's a clearer picture as to how much snow we could see across Minnesota and Wisconsin this week.
That updated picture from the National Weather Service now includes a winter storm warning for much of the northern half of Minnesota and a couple of Wisconsin counties, where a foot or more of snow could fall during the middle part of this week, along with some windy conditions to make travel a mess..
Like many late-season snowstorms, this snow is expected to be wet and heavy, making removal of this snow (once it falls) a real pain as well.
Here's the latest on what to expect.
What areas will be impacted by this winter storm?
A total of 28 Minnesota counties and two Wisconsin counties are under a winter storm warning for later Tuesday, through Wednesday night this week. Those areas are shaded in pink in the map, indicating where the worst of the storm is expected.
In addition, a few dozen counties across Minnesota and Wisconsin are also under winter weather advisories (the areas shaded in purple), where hazardous, but less-severe winter weather is expected.

How much snow will fall across Minnesota and Wisconsin?
While it varies from place to place, there's a large swath of Minnesota that could see at least 8 inches of snow by the time things wrap up Wednesday night. Some places in Northcentral Minnesota and along the North Shore could see over a foot of snow.

The areas in the darkest orange in the map below could see at least a foot of snow, including small pockets near Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing, with a large span from Duluth all the way up to Grand Portage along the North Shore. In the higher elevations along the North Shore, as much as 17 inches of snow could fall.
Areas in the yellow could see 6-8 inches of snow, while the blue-shared areas are currently expecting 5 inches of snow or less.
What's the timing on this storm?
Snow will start Tuesday afternoon in the western parts of Minnesota, starting by Tuesday evening in eastern parts of the state.
Snow is expected to wrap up by the end of the day on Wednesday through most of the region, with some lingering snow possible early Thursday.
