Billionaire Walks Away From Controversial Lake Superior Mega Mansion
She is a member of one of the wealthiest families in the United States, and she caused a huge controversy in Duluth over the last few years when word spread about her plans for a mega mansion on the shores of Lake Superior.
A Billionaire’s Controversial Duluth Dream
Beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2024, a limited liability company called North Shore LS LLC, owned by Kathy Cargill, started buying properties in the Park Point neighborhood in Duluth. Under the cover of her LLC, Cargill purchased more than a dozen properties and began bulldozing some homes for future development.

As rumors swirled, the identity of the buyer was revealed, and the neighborhood learned a billionaire was behind the acquisitions.

Words That Fueled the Fire
Once nearby residents realized who was moving in, tensions rose quickly. In an interview, Cargill referred to some of the homes as “crap” and claimed that Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert “peed in his Cheerios” for expressing concerns about her plans.
Since the controversy broke, little progress has been made. Now, it appears Cargill may be walking away from her Park Point plans.
The Star Tribune reports she is selling three properties, grouped into one listing, on the Lake Superior side of Park Point, along with three more on the harbor side. Altogether, $2.7 million worth of real estate is now on the market.
What’s Next for Park Point?
It seems the Cargill vs. Duluth drama may finally be ending, at least for now. For residents, that means breathing a sigh of relief that a massive mansion won’t be appearing on Park Point anytime soon.
